Tragic Turn of Events for Ohio Family
A father in Ohio, whose son died in a police shooting last week, has been charged with homicide for allegedly killing a recently retired sheriff’s deputy the next day.
Rodney Hinton Jr. appeared in court on Tuesday for a hearing related to the murder charges, and the situation escalated with the death of retired Hamilton County Sheriff Deputy Larry Henderson, as reported.
According to detectives, Hinton Jr. drove toward Deputy Henderson, striking a metal utility pole. The incident occurred at an intersection where Henderson was located.
The courtroom was reportedly crowded with family members and law enforcement officials, and the atmosphere was described as tense.
Prosecutors presented testimony from Cincinnati Police Detectives, indicating that Hinton Jr. had visited the police station prior to the incident, where he reviewed bodycam footage of the police shooting that took his son’s life, Ryan Hinton. This shooting reportedly happened when officers attempted to stop a stolen vehicle.
Detectives noted that Hinton Jr. became emotional after watching the footage, expressing concerns from his family about him driving afterward.
Initially, he refrained from driving but later decided to retrieve his vehicle, heading toward an area near the University of Cincinnati where Deputy Henderson was overseeing traffic for a graduation event.
During the incident, Hinton Jr. reportedly accelerated towards the deputy. Prosecutors pointed out the absence of skid marks or signs of braking, leading them to assert that he deliberately caused the deputy’s death.
They characterized the act as intentional, claiming Hinton Jr. deliberately struck Deputy Henderson.
Judge Tyrone Yates presided over the hearing, during which arguments were made regarding Hinton Jr.’s bail status. His defense attorney, Clyde Bennett, entered a plea of not guilty and mentioned his client’s potential mental health issues.
At the conclusion of the hearing, bail was denied. Bennett indicated plans to request a competency hearing in light of the circumstances surrounding the case.
The next court date for this matter was set for May 12.
