Heritage Foundation Leader Explains to Megyn Kelly How Harvard Misuses Public Funds

Heritage Foundation Critiques Harvard’s Use of Public Funds

Kevin Roberts, president of the Heritage Foundation, spoke with SiriusXM’s Megyn Kelly on Tuesday, asserting that Harvard University misuses public funds to promote what he called “day nonsense.” He labeled the institution a “radical left” “icon.”

On Friday, former President Donald Trump announced that Ivy League schools would lose their tax-exempt status. This came after universities reportedly did not comply with his administration’s demands to address anti-Semitism and abandon diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. During “The Megyn Kelly Show,” Kelly highlighted Education Secretary Linda McMahon’s statement that Harvard is ineligible for a new grant, prompting Roberts to share his perspective, noting his experience as a university president.

Roberts began by praising Secretary McMahon for her efforts, mentioning they were commendable, stating, “It was a hot fire.” He criticized Harvard, arguing that the institution, once esteemed, has become overly self-righteous, expressing disdain for the current state of affairs.

“As someone who has held a university presidency, I would have reached out directly to the president if I were in charge at Harvard, seeking a discussion on our common objectives,” Roberts stated. He emphasized a desire for educational growth, valuing public funds for advancing science and American values. However, he lamented that Harvard seems disinterested in engaging meaningfully.

In a letter to Harvard on Monday, McMahon condemned the university for a “systemic pattern of violating federal law,” stating it is no longer eligible for federal funding. She accused Harvard of failing to abide by a Supreme Court ruling regarding racial preferences and continuing to practice what she termed “ugly racism” in both undergraduate and graduate programs.

Roberts backed the administration’s stance against institutions like Harvard, claiming that these universities have compromised their academic integrity by prioritizing progressive social issues over educational standards.

He reflected on the observable decline in educational achievement, linking it to graduation rates, and expressed enthusiasm for the administration’s efforts in education policy, particularly targeting Harvard as a focal point.

Earlier, in April, Harvard initiated legal action against the Trump administration, alleging that the withholding of federal funds was being used as leverage to influence academic decisions. The university insisted it would not permit federal overreach.

On April 14, the Joint Task Force to Fight Anti-Semitism announced the cancellation of a $2.2 billion multi-year grant along with an additional $60 million contract tied to the university.
