Trump’s effort to raise taxes on the wealthy

In a last-ditch attempt, the White House is pushing for a tax hike targeting the wealthiest Americans, which is part of President Trump’s “big beautiful bill.” Sources indicate that Trump’s demands echo those made recently, as reported by Punchbowl News. He has asked House Speaker Mike Johnson to support this policy.

The current proposal suggests the highest marginal income tax rate, set at 37% since the 2017 tax overhaul, will expire for high-income earners by year-end, potentially rising back to 39.6%. This move is seen as a way for Republicans to extend tax cuts while still appealing to more moderate incomes.

By 2024, the top tax bracket applies to individuals making over $609,000 and co-filers earning over $731,000. However, the White House is proposing new brackets for those with substantially higher incomes—$2.5 million for singles and $5 million for joint filers. Trump is reportedly considering an increase back to the higher rate to protect middle-class tax cuts and Medicaid.

Notably, pushing for a tax increase on wealthy Americans would represent a significant shift for House Republican leaders. The discussion is ongoing, with insights coming from Emily Brooks and Michael Schnell covered in more detail in recent communications.
