Federal judge puts a stop to Trump’s administration’s plans for large-scale layoffs.

A federal judge issued a ruling on Friday that temporarily halts the Trump administration’s plan to downsize various agencies and eliminate numerous federal positions.

A U.S. district judge in California granted a two-week suspension, emphasizing that while the president can initiate changes to federal agencies and implement significant layoffs, these actions must be conducted legally.

“The president has the authority to seek modifications to the administrative framework, but this must be done legitimately, and in instances of large-scale restructuring, it requires the cooperation of the legislative branch. Many presidents have sought this collaboration in the past,” the judge stated.

“There’s nothing stopping the president from requesting this cooperation, as was done during his previous term. In fact, the courts may need to ask Congress for support to execute the required changes, which is why a temporary restraining order has been issued to pause the extensive reductions,” the federal judge added.

This restraining order will remain in effect until May 23rd, during which no new performance cut notifications will be implemented by the Office of Management and Budget or the Office of Personnel Management.

This ruling follows a lawsuit filed last month by a coalition of unions, cities, nonprofits, and counties, representing one of the most substantial challenges to Trump’s administrative actions. The plaintiffs contended that the president lacks the authority to restructure the federal government without Congress’s approval.

The judge’s order applies to multiple agencies, including the Departments of Labor, Energy, Commerce, Veterans Affairs, and Health and Human Services.

Recently, tens of thousands of federal employees have been dismissed, and several agencies have faced significant budget cuts or closures. During his second term, Trump aimed to diminish the federal government’s size, partnering with figures like Elon Musk on efficiency efforts, which led to legal disputes.

Following this recent lawsuit, several judges have also ordered pauses on the administration’s core initiatives.
