Zelensky Confirms Meeting With Putin on Thursday, Calls for Trump’s Participation

Ukrainian President Voldimir Zelensky has agreed to V Vladimir Putin’s proposal for direct negotiations, taking the advice of President Trump to consider this opportunity. He expressed gratitude for the chance to have Ukrainian leaders engage similarly.

Putin continues to push for these direct talks with Zelensky, a suggestion Trump has endorsed. This comes amidst announcements from European leaders about new sanctions on Russia, in light of Putin’s reluctance to begin a 30-day ceasefire set to commence this Monday.

Despite calls for a ceasefire, Putin suggested on Thursday that negotiations should start in Istanbul, Turkey, and Trump has urged Ukraine to accept this proposal. He mentioned that having direct talks might help clarify whether a deal is achievable, allowing European leaders and the U.S. to understand the situation better.

“At least they can determine if a deal is possible, and if not, European leaders and the U.S. can know where everything is and proceed accordingly,” Trump noted in a recent post.

On the other hand, French President Emmanuel Macron appears to oppose the upcoming meeting, arguing that negotiations cannot happen without a ceasefire in place. He emphasized the need for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire beginning Monday, stating that discussions cannot occur while fighting continues.

“There is no negotiation while the weapons are talking. If civilians are being bombed at the same time, there is no dialogue. Now, a ceasefire is needed so the story can begin,” Macron stated on social media.

Zelensky reacted to Trump’s statements, voicing hope for a ceasefire but remaining open to meeting with Putin regardless.

“I’ve heard President Trump’s statement. I support his idea of a complete and unconditional ceasefire, long enough to provide the basis for diplomacy,” Zelensky remarked. He also mentioned that if Trump were able to attend the meeting in Turkey, it would be beneficial.

Furthermore, Trump has been considering participating in the peace talks in Turkey, indicating he might adjust his schedule if he sees potential for productive discussions.

“There’s a good meeting potential,” Trump commented, highlighting that Erdogan, the Turkish President, would be an excellent host for the discussions.
