Volodymyr Zelenskiy States That Only a Direct Meeting with Vladimir Putin Can Achieve Peace

Ceasefire Negotiations Proposed by Zelensky

Ukrainian President Voldymir Zelensky expressed on Tuesday his desire for a direct, unconditional ceasefire discussion with Vladimir Putin. He made this statement during a speech given in Istanbul, emphasizing that only Russian leaders have the authority to implement such a pause in hostilities.

He criticized Putin’s reluctance to meet, describing it as concerning, and indicated that he anticipates “strong sanctions” from the US and the European Union if this meeting does not occur.

Zelensky clarified to reporters that “everything in Russia” hinges on Putin, which means that direct talks with him are vital for achieving a ceasefire and putting an end to the conflict. “If he says he’s ready for a ceasefire, it opens the door to discussing all the elements to conclude the war,” he commented.

He also mentioned that Ukraine had invited President Donald Trump to attend a meeting on Thursday, though his participation has yet to be confirmed. Trump had indicated on Monday his willingness to join future discussions while traveling in the region.

Additionally, Ukrainian officials conveyed that they have informed China of their support for a 30-day ceasefire, which Zelensky argues is essential before peace negotiations can commence.
