Journalist Mark Halperin commented on Monday that the recent scrutiny surrounding Pennsylvania Democratic Senator John Fetterman’s mental fitness is likely to escalate, especially after a troubling report emerged this month regarding his conduct.
Halperin expressed confusion as to why Republicans are being so vocal about their concerns for Fetterman. He remarked during a “morning meeting” that some in the GOP believe Fetterman is facing undue criticism due to his politics.
He pondered, “Is there an ulterior motive? Do they genuinely admire him, or is there an attempt to bring him down?” He noted that the senator’s behaviors have stirred more speculation than necessary, suggesting that commentary around Fetterman’s actions is bound to emerge.
Fetterman, who suffered a stroke and has previously opened up about his battle with depression in 2022, has become a focal point of criticism. According to a report from New York Magazine, former and current staff members alleged that Fetterman displayed erratic behavior, making it hard for him to perform his duties effectively.
Once a widely admired progressive figure, Fetterman has found himself at odds with various factions of the Democratic Party, particularly due to his support for Israel and border security, and his occasional collaboration with the Trump administration.
Concerns about his mental health resurfaced after an incident during a meeting on May 1, where he reportedly expressed feelings of paranoia and despair, stating, “Everyone is mad at me” and “Why do you all hate me, what have I done?”
Recent reporting from The Philadelphia Inquirer has also raised alarms about Fetterman’s challenges in office.
Despite these claims, Fetterman has brushed off the New York Magazine piece, describing it as a “hit job.” His office defended him, reiterating that such reports are part of a coordinated attack against him.
Meanwhile, other colleagues in Congress have come forward to support Fetterman, arguing that he is a victim of political maneuvering. Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma acknowledged that he isn’t a medical expert but implied that the Democratic Party appears to be turning against Fetterman as he challenges them on critical issues.
Mullin reflected on how Fetterman was once a highly regarded figure in Pennsylvania, emphasizing that he isn’t one to shy away from expressing himself—a quality that can be both a strength and a weakness in the political arena.
Fetterman and Halperin did not provide comments on the situation when approached for statements.
