Vance Addresses Police Leadership After Tragic Incident
Vice President JD Vance pointed out that American politicians bear responsibility for the negative portrayal of police following the tragic death of a sheriff’s aide, who, as Vance described, was “taken by a bloodthirsty criminal” in Cincinnati.
During a law enforcement breakfast at her home, Vance expressed the need for strong moral and policy leadership to support police forces. She reflected on Larry Henderson, a Special Deputy in Hamilton County, Ohio, highlighting the importance of his service. “Larry Henderson lost his life working to keep people safe,” she emphasized. “When considering the senseless crime that took his life, we must hold accountable the individual who committed it.”
Vance criticized American leadership for turning police officers into adversaries instead of recognizing them as the civil servants they truly are. “For too long, our leaders have made our police an enemy,” she stated.
A recent incident led to the death of Deputy Henderson. He was struck by a vehicle while directing traffic at a graduation ceremony near the University of Cincinnati on May 2nd. Rodney Hinton has been charged with aggravated murder for allegedly driving towards Henderson intentionally following an incident in which officers fatally shot Hinton’s son. Hinton has pleaded not guilty, and a trial is set for February 2026.
Vance sought to reassure law enforcement personnel, noting President Donald Trump’s support. “This administration stands behind you,” she remarked. “We appreciate what you do, and it remains crucial that you have strong moral leadership alongside public policy.”
In April, an executive order was signed to bolster resources for law enforcement, focusing on providing legal assistance to officers facing unjust fees in the line of duty. “We want to protect officers from frivolous lawsuits when they are acting appropriately,” Vance remarked, indicating a desire to alleviate the burdens placed on them.
In light of Henderson’s death, reforms are being proposed. Senator Bernie Moreno of Ohio introduced the Larry Henderson Act to the Senate, which aims to impose stricter penalties for those who assault law enforcement officers. Moreno stated, “It’s time for serious consequences for anyone who attacks our police.”
During National Police Week, Vance is also scheduled to speak at the National Peace Officer’s Service Ceremony at the U.S. Capitol, underscoring the administration’s commitment to supporting law enforcement.
