Fran Drescher, president of SAG-AFTRA, urges Trump to swap tariffs for tax cuts

A Different Approach to Hollywood’s Challenges

Recently, Donald Trump proposed a plan to impose 100% tariffs on foreign films, aiming to protect Hollywood from what he describes as a “very fast death.”

Fran Drescher, known for her role in “The Nanny” and now serving as the president of SAG-AFTRA, believes tax credits would be a more effective solution for making the industry competitive. In an interview celebrating her recognition at the New York Women’s Foundation’s women’s breakfast, she expressed her views.

Drescher noted, “Our industry is currently collaborating with President Trump on tax cuts to ensure we have the necessary tax relief to compete globally.” She pointed out that, “Our president is a businessman. He has revenue challenges, and it’s hard to keep businesses from going abroad unless the costs are manageable.”

On May 4, Trump conveyed his intention to meet with Hollywood leaders to discuss taxing foreign-made films, aiming to support the U.S. industry in recovering from recent strikes by SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America.

During a meeting in the Oval Office, Trump commented, “Hollywood doesn’t engage in that business much. They have impressive marketing, but their actual output isn’t significant.” He also stated on Truth Social, “The American film industry is facing rapid decline. Other countries provide various incentives that entice filmmakers and studios away from the U.S.”

In contrast, Drescher argued, “Tax relief is the solution to our issues.” She emphasized, “We don’t need tariffs. Instead, we should secure tax benefits to create an environment here that rivals other nations.”

A representative for SAG-AFTRA added that the union is focused on collaborating with various industry stakeholders, including the MPA and Hollywood Ambassadors, to address these challenges.
