Vice President Meets Pope Leo XIV
The Vice President welcomed Pope Leo XIV for his first Mass in Vatican City on Sunday. He was joined by his wife, Second Lady Usha Vance, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio with his spouse, Janet Rubio.
Also present was Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his wife. After the Mass, there was a greeting exchange in St. Peter’s Square where Vance and Rubio were seen shaking hands with the Pope.
Vance led the U.S. delegation for this event. It’s notable that Zelensky has recently offered to host talks between Russian and Ukrainian leaders at the Vatican, aiming to broker peace amid the ongoing conflict.
On social media, Zelensky shared that he met with Vance and Rubio during his visit to Rome. He mentioned discussions about negotiations held in Istanbul, where Russia sent a less influential delegation. Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine is prepared for genuine diplomatic engagement and highlighted the necessity for a complete, unconditional ceasefire as soon as possible.
He also covered topics like sanctions against Russia, bilateral trade, defense cooperation, and the future of prisoner exchanges. Zelensky expressed gratitude towards all Americans for their support and leadership in saving lives.
Following the Mass, it was reported that the Pope met with Zelensky personally. Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested that the Vatican could serve as a mediator in the conflict with Russia.
Rubio had previously indicated that the Vatican might be an appropriate venue for peace talks, expressing that while he wouldn’t label it as a broker, it certainly could provide a comfortable setting for both parties involved. He remarked on the constructive role the Vatican might play in facilitating discussions.
