Trump’s Education Department Withdraws ‘Largest’ Fine Ever Imposed on Christian School

Department of Education Revokes Fine Against Grand Canyon University

The Department of Education (ED) announced on Friday that it has rescinded a $37.7 million fine initially imposed on Grand Canyon University (GCU) during the Biden administration.

This fine was the largest ever proposed for the university, leading to claims that the Biden administration was unfairly targeting and penalizing Christian universities. Under the previous administration, the ED had rejected GCU’s allegations of bias and misconduct, referring to circumstances of “no discovery.”

ED spokesperson Ellen Keist remarked, “Unlike previous administrations, we will not persecute or prosecute universities based on their religious affiliation.” She added that while the Trump administration aimed to hold all higher education institutions accountable, current enforcement is intended to better serve students.

In 2023, GCU faced fines after accusations it had substantially misrepresented the costs related to a doctoral program. GCU President Brian Mueller expressed gratitude for the reversal, stating, “The facts clearly support our claim that we were falsely accused of misleading doctoral students, and we appreciate the recognition that those accusations are not merit.” He emphasized GCU’s commitment to innovation and transparency in higher education.

That same year, the ED also pursued GCU’s non-commercial status. Despite IRS acknowledgment, ED claimed GCU did not meet the necessary requirements. The university was involved in litigation and achieved a notable victory regarding this matter.

In April, the American Principles Project urged Congress to investigate what they termed former President Biden’s “attack” on Christian universities. They highlighted the cumulative financial penalties against GCU and Liberty University, indicating these fines exceeded all other penalties from the Department of Education over the past seven years.

GCU has yet to respond to inquiries regarding this matter.
