Texas Senators Seek Federal Reimbursement for Border Security Costs
Two U.S. senators from Texas, along with a notable conservative lawmaker, are urging the federal government to reimburse the state for billions spent on securing the southern border during the Biden administration.
The State Border Security Assistance Act aims to create funding sources through the Department of Justice and Homeland Security to cover expenses incurred by states for border security efforts initiated after January 20, 2021.
This funding would help reimburse costs related to constructing border walls, monitoring law enforcement, and the arrests, detention, and prosecution of illegal immigration.
Texas officials have stated that if the law is enacted, any remaining funds before the end of the Trump administration will be returned to the Treasury and repaid before impacting the national debt.
The legislation, led by Texas Republican Senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, also includes a Companion Act introduced by Representative Chip Roy.
According to the Texas lawmakers, the state’s border security initiatives had to be financed independently due to the federal government waiving its responsibilities at that time. Cruz highlighted the predicament, noting that “Texas was at the forefront of the Biden administration’s open border crisis, and the Texans were dealing with the outcome.”
Cornyn echoed this sentiment, expressing pride in presenting a law that provides refunds for Texas’s substantial efforts to secure the southern border. He mentioned that previous administrations had compelled Texas to act in ways they shouldn’t have had to.
“Today, I am proud to introduce legislation that offers financial restitution for our historic initiatives to secure Texas’ southern borders,” Cornyn remarked.
He then expressed gratitude for the leadership of former President Trump and various border officials, asserting their commitment to enforcing immigration laws effectively.
Roy commented that actions taken by President Biden and former DHS head Alejandro Mayorkas have contributed to increased lawlessness and crime, placing Texans and all Americans at risk.
He noted that Texas took the lead in protecting the country when federal action was lacking and therefore deserves proper reimbursement for costs that should have been managed by the federal government.
Recently, Governor Abbott outlined expenditures he expects to see refunded, including $58 million for concertina wire and border fencing, $77 million for court costs related to prosecutions, and nearly $20 million for vehicle theft investigations in border communities.
Fox News Digital reached out to Attorney General Ken Paxton for comments, as he is currently campaigning for Cornyn’s Senate seat.
