Elon Musk states Tesla aims to start robotaxi trials by the end of June.

Tesla Set to Test Robotaxi Services in Austin

Tesla is gearing up to start testing its long-anticipated Robotaxi services in Austin, Texas, by the end of June, according to the CEO, Elon Musk. This comes despite ongoing scrutiny from US regulators about safety concerns.

The electric vehicle manufacturer plans to roll out about 10 self-driving cars in select areas of the city. Musk mentioned in a CNBC interview that they aim to increase this number to roughly 1,000 in just a few months.

“We are actually deploying in the safest zones, not throughout all of Austin, so we’re keeping it geofenced,” Musk stated.

Meanwhile, Tesla’s stock saw only a slight dip of less than 1% during afternoon trading.

This testing phase is crucial for Tesla, particularly as Musk has been shifting the company’s focus away from developing new, cost-effective EV platforms, especially given the diminishing demand. A significant part of the company’s future relies on successfully launching Robotaxi services and its Optimus humanoid robots.

“In the long run, what matters are autonomy and Optimus,” Musk emphasized.

However, it’s worth noting that the commercialization of autonomous vehicle technology has its challenges. Strict regulations and the need for heavy investments have pushed several businesses outside the market. Companies like Alphabet’s Waymo, which also operate in this space, are facing increasing scrutiny.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been investigating crashes involving Tesla’s fully automated driving system, which has been linked to visibility issues since October. Recently, road safety regulators have posed questions to Tesla regarding the rollout of its paid Robotaxi services and how the vehicles perform under adverse weather conditions.

On another note, Musk mentioned that Tesla is in discussions with major automakers to secure licenses for the Full Self-Driving software, which is anticipated to play a crucial role in supporting the Robotaxi initiative.
