Trump Pays Tribute to 3 Fallen Deputies with First ‘Medals of Sacrifice’

Trump Honors Fallen Florida Officers

On Monday, President Donald Trump paid tribute to three Florida officers who lost their lives in 2024 while serving their communities.

During an event in the Oval Office, the president presented Medals of Sacrifice to CPL. Lewis Paes, Deputy Sheriff Ignacio “Dan” Diaz, and Deputy Sheriff Ralph “Butch” Waller. These officers tragically died in November while responding to a situation in Roxahatchie.

Trump spoke about how Rep. Brian Mast had recently introduced legislation aimed at ensuring that similar medals are awarded to law enforcement personnel who give their lives in the line of duty.

The ceremony coincided with National Police Week, which is dedicated to honoring the commitment of law enforcement professionals across the nation.

“These three officers were not just colleagues; they were close friends. Their dedication to protecting the people of Palm Beach County was unwavering,” Trump commented during his speech.

According to CBS 12, the three fallen deputies were on motorcycle patrol and conducting traffic enforcement near the Arden Clubhouse when their vehicle veered off the road.

The Medal of Sacrifice, designed by Tiffany & Co., is notable for its silver and 24-carat gold composition featuring the U.S. coat of arms. The medal was crafted in Rhode Island.

Eric Trump, the president’s son, also attended the ceremony. He mentioned how he, along with others, felt there needed to be recognition for first responders who have made the ultimate sacrifice, which led to the creation of the medal.

“They expressed their willingness to create something truly stunning to honor these remarkable officers and EMS responders. About six months later, here we have this beautiful tribute,” he said, expressing gratitude for the effort involved.

During the rally, Mast noted, “This is the first time in our nation’s history that all first responders, including law enforcement and firefighters, will be recognized for their sacrifices at the presidential level.”
