Israeli Settlers Attacked Palestinians and Set Cars and Homes on Fire in West Bank

Recent Escalation of Violence in Brukin

Israeli settlers have attacked Palestinian vehicles and properties in Brukin, an area in the occupied West Bank, marking the latest incident in a series of violent events following the deaths of pregnant settlers this month.

Residents of Brukin report that these assaults have become a regular occurrence, with significant disturbances happening late at night. A local resident mentioned a group of around 100 people who appeared under the cover of darkness, throwing Molotov cocktails and causing havoc.

Akram Sabra, a village inhabitant, shared a harrowing experience of seeing his car engulfed in flames. He recounted leaving his home and being attacked, stating, “I saw my car burning, and then they beat me, but I’m still feeling dizzy.”

The Israeli military confirmed that they had received reports of property destruction in the area, adding that soldiers were dispatched but the suspects had fled before their arrival. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the situation is currently under investigation.

Following the homicide of Tsera Gez, a pregnant woman from a nearby settlement, Israeli forces have enacted strict lockdowns around Brukin. Reports indicate that troops engaged and killed a suspect connected to the attack, who had prior convictions linked to Hamas activities.

In the aftermath of the murder, Palestinian residents have described a surge in violence, including attacks involving arson and stone-throwing on homes and vehicles. Mustafa Carter, another Brukin resident, emphasized the severity, stating, “They come to us almost every day, several times a day, and they attack us with stones and abuse.”

The UN’s humanitarian office reported that over 11,000 Palestinians in Burkin and Kahru Addik have faced restrictions due to ongoing hostilities, with 28 incidents involving injuries or property damage documented by May 19. Last year alone saw a record high of 1,449 attacks, the most in over two decades.

Growing Tensions Amid the Gaza War

Since the onset of the Gaza conflict, attacks by settlers on Palestinian villages have escalated, coinciding with a rapid expansion of settlement construction under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration. The Israeli military is currently conducting extensive operations in the West Bank, the largest seen since the second Intifada 20 years ago.

UN reports indicate that this military initiative has led to the displacement of more than 40,000 Palestinians, exacerbating fears among many about a potential complete annexation of the West Bank by Israel. Some members of Netanyahu’s government have explicitly advocated for this, suggesting the need to evacuate many Palestinians from the area.

The West Bank, along with Gaza and East Jerusalem, is sought by Palestinians as part of a future independent state. This territory has been under Israeli military occupation since it was seized during the 1967 Middle East War. Most nations consider the settlements illegal under international law, while Israel maintains its claims based on historical and biblical ties to the region.
