Iranian student sues California college, alleging staff suppressed free expression over views on illegal immigration

Lawsuit Filed by Iranian Student Against University of California

An Iranian student is taking legal action against the University of California, claiming that he faced threats of punishment over his political remarks.

Matin Samimiat alleges that the administration at Golden West College reacted negatively to his comments on topics such as illegal immigration, women’s sports, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Samimiat, along with fellow student Annaliese Hutchings, seems to have stirred controversy during the club expo at Golden West in Huntington Beach last February. The booth they operated, affiliated with the conservative organization Young America’s Foundation, featured a sign urging students to “change My Mind” and engage in discussions with them.

However, it wasn’t Samimiat’s remarks directly that caused issues; instead, the content displayed on a whiteboard before the booth was described as distressing. The board included messages such as “Being American is a privilege and we should all be grateful for it,” and various remarks about illegal immigration and gender participation in sports.

The board’s statements included a reference labeling Hamas as a “terrorist organization.” Samimiat claimed that the school’s response involved an informal meeting with the Director of Student Life and Leadership Development, Stephanie Smallshaw, who expressed concerns over the content they were sharing.

According to the lawsuit, Smallshaw indicated that both students could face disciplinary action if they continued to express similar views. It was asserted that she argued Samimiat’s comments on illegal immigration could “dehumanize groups of people.” Furthermore, she reportedly warned that language that could incite violence, including statements regarding Hamas, was unacceptable.

Responses from Golden West College or Smallshaw have not been received at this time.

Samimiat emphasized that he left the Middle East to enjoy the freedoms available in the U.S., yet now finds himself facing potential consequences for sharing his political opinions.

Political commentator Ian Miles Chong weighed in, suggesting that students like Samimiat should not encounter training or restrictions on their viewpoints. He remarked, “Isn’t the purpose of a university to promote critical thinking?” indicating dissatisfaction with how the administration tries to control discourse on campus.
