Jim Banks urges WNBA and Fever to issue an apology following the investigation of Angel Reese

Senator Calls for Apology from WNBA and Indiana Fever

US Senator Jim Banks, representing Indiana, has urged the WNBA and the Indiana Fever to apologize to their fans. This comes after an investigation found no evidence supporting claims that racial comments were made towards Angel Reese during a recent game.

The allegations arose following a matchup between the Chicago Sky, where Reese played a prominent role, on May 17. The league conducted a thorough investigation, but their findings seemingly did not corroborate the accusations.

The WNBA stated that after reviewing information from fans, teams, and arena staff, they found no basis for the allegations. “The investigation didn’t reveal evidence of the claims,” they said in a statement. The league emphasized its commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive environment and upholding a clear fan code of conduct.

Despite the league’s conclusions, Senator Banks has criticized Reese, suggesting that she should offer a public apology. During a recent appearance, he highlighted that Reese accused Fever fans of racism, but the investigation deemed such claims to be unfounded. “It’s simple,” Banks said, “she should acknowledge that she was wrong and apologize to the fans.”

He expressed frustration over the entire situation, asserting that it tarnished the reputation of Indiana and its supporters. “These accusations were baseless, and yet they resulted in unnecessary turmoil,” he remarked. Banks also noted that Reese has previously voiced similar concerns about racism from fans during her interactions.

Questions remain about whether Reese has formally addressed the situation with the league. Reports indicated that Sky head coach Tyler Marsh learned about the investigation’s outcome at the same time as the public. Banks believes a simple apology would have sufficed to rectify the situation.

Prior to the 2025 season, the WNBA initiated a program aimed at combating hate and promoting respect throughout their games. This program utilizes advanced technology to monitor social media interactions during events.
