Following a day of activity, the Department of Homeland Security has provided information about a joint operation carried out in Los Angeles on Friday morning. The Homeland Security Investigation (HSI) announced that it collaborated with various agencies, including the FBI and the Drug Enforcement Administration, to execute four federal search warrants at three different sites in LA. Reports have confirmed that the locations included two clothing stores in downtown LA and a Home Depot in the Westlake area.
According to a spokesperson for HSI, around 44 individuals were arrested on administrative charges, while another was detained for obstruction. Specifically, this obstruction arrest involved David Fuerta, the president of the California International Service Employees Union.
U.S. Attorney Bill Essay noted that during the execution of a legal warrant at a workplace, Fuerta allegedly obstructed the agents by blocking their vehicle. Consequently, he is set to face charges in federal court on Monday for his actions.
Essay shared images on social media showing Fuerta being handcuffed and placed in a vehicle, alongside a video of the incident which depicted Fuerta initially standing in front of an unmarked SUV before moving aside when prompted by the federal agents. The footage showed him on the ground with several agents nearby as tensions escalated.
After the arrest, reports indicated that Fuerta had sustained injuries, prompting a response from California Governor Gavin Newsom, who described him as a “respected leader, patriot, and advocate for workers.” Newsom emphasized that no one should be harmed during such government actions.
In a statement from SEIU California, it was revealed that Fuerta received medical attention at a local hospital and is currently in federal custody. He expressed through the union that his situation reflects a larger issue facing the community: “What happened to me isn’t about me. It’s about us as a community standing together against injustice.” He lamented the treatment of hardworking individuals and called for collective resistance against such actions.
The SEIU represents a diverse group of professionals, including social workers, nurses, and security guards, and claims a membership exceeding 750,000. The union has vowed to push back against federal actions and claims that “ICE chose the wrong side” in targeting Fuerta.
