National Guard Deployment in Texas Ahead of Protests
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced the deployment of National Guard troops to various locations across the state in anticipation of planned anti-ICE protests. The governor stated that this measure aims to “ensure peace and order.”
In his statement, Abbott’s office emphasized the importance of peaceful protests in American society while also condemning the lawlessness witnessed recently in Los Angeles. “Anyone who engages in violent actions or damages property will face prompt accountability under the law,” the statement noted.
Abbott made it clear that lawful protests are protected, but he cautioned against any actions that could harm individuals or property, warning that such behavior would lead to arrests.
The governor’s directive comes in the wake of recent unrest in Los Angeles, where protests erupted into riots following a series of immigration enforcement actions. During this turmoil, California’s Governor Gavin Newsom faced criticism for not supporting federal officials, which led to President Donald Trump ordering the deployment of the California State Guard. Newsom’s challenge to a court order from the Trump administration did not succeed.
San Antonio’s Deputy Police Chief Jesse Salamet confirmed to local news that security personnel have been mobilized to prepare for the upcoming protest this weekend.
Reports indicate that Randy Clark covered a demonstration in Alamo last weekend, which was organized by a group known for its role in the Los Angeles protests that saw significant unrest. Participants used vocal chants directed at ICE and waved various flags to express their support for a range of progressive causes.
Clark mentioned that some attendees were encouraged to share messages promoting community involvement and awareness regarding ICE activities, aiming to motivate residents to take a stand.
According to SAPD Chief William McManus, who reached out to state officials to confirm the deployment order, they are prepared for a peaceful demonstration but ready to address any potential issues that arise. “While peaceful protests are part of our country’s fabric, Texas does not tolerate lawlessness,” McManus reiterated.
