Judicial Ruling on Trump’s Authority Over Federal Forces

A judge in a lower court has ordered President Donald Trump to take measures regarding control of the federal government. The ruling from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals may not fully endorse Trump’s stance, but reports indicate that for now, the president retains authority over federal security forces.

U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer labeled Trump’s actions as “illegal,” yet he suspended the ruling until Friday at 3pm, allowing the administration time to appeal. This decision came as Trump mobilized state guards and approximately 700 Marines to address violent protests in Los Angeles against immigration policies.

The 9th Circuit has set a hearing for Tuesday to deliberate on Breyer’s order and whether it should be enforced or extended.

Following recent protests, Trump activated 4,000 members of the California State Guard, a move met with pushback from Governor Gavin Newsom and the state’s Attorney General, who argued that the president acted without the governor’s consent—marking an unprecedented instance in U.S. history.

The White House called Breyer’s ruling “unprecedented,” claiming it jeopardizes the safety of federal officials. Spokesperson Anna Kelly stated that the district court overstepped its bounds by challenging the president’s authority as commander-in-chief. She emphasized that the decision to mobilize the National Guard was within the rightful scope of presidential powers aimed at ensuring security in Los Angeles.
