Governor of Missouri issues a ‘State of Emergency’ and calls in the National Guard during protests against ICE

Missouri Governor Declares State of Emergency Amid Protests

Governor Mike Kehoe of Missouri has announced a state of emergency in anticipation of anti-ICE protests scheduled throughout the state. He has made it clear that while the authorities are prepared to support peaceful demonstrations, any violence will not be tolerated.

Under Executive Order 25-25, the governor has authorized the mobilization of state military personnel to assist in maintaining order. He emphasizes that these measures are purely preventive, citing the nationwide unrest triggered by crackdowns on undocumented immigrants initiated by the Trump administration.

Despite the intent to ensure peace, Kehoe has reinforced the state’s National Guard, preparing for the possibility of violent clashes. This decision follows a collaborative effort involving the Missouri Highway Patrol and other safety departments to monitor activities across the state and support local governments.

The governor stated, “We respect and defend our right to protest peacefully, but we do not tolerate violence or lawlessness in our state. Other states may wait for the chaos to continue, but Missouri is taking a proactive approach when it needs help to support local law enforcement agencies to protect its citizens and communities.”

This executive order arrives just days after hundreds took to the streets in Kansas City to protest against ICE. Additionally, a significant turnout is expected at a planned “No Kings” rally, coinciding with a military parade on Flag Day, which also marks President Trump’s birthday.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas expressed concerns over the governor’s action. His office noted that while the mayor advocates for responsible protests, he questions the lack of to address other groups, including those with more extreme ideologies.

In a statement, the mayor’s office mentioned, “Mayor Lucas is interested in strengthening the enforcement of one set of protesters, but there is no action or assistance to local law enforcement as neo-Nazis march through city streets in Missouri. For those who do not act responsibly, the mayor will stand by local law enforcement to handle necessary enforcement measures.”

Opposition has emerged from Democrats, particularly from state minority leader Ashley Orne, who contends that the governor’s preemption declaration threatens First Amendment rights.

Orne asserted, “The protests planned across Missouri this weekend have been driven by the president’s unfair and forceful military response to opposition to his presidential policies… Doing the same thing will only raise tensions and increase the likelihood of conflict.”

Republican supporters of the governor argue that the intention behind his proclamation is to deliver a clear message about the state’s stance against violence and riots.

Representative Mark Alford stated, “We support the right to peacefully demonstrate, but violence and riots are not tolerated in Shawnee.”
