Karen Bass Attributes Police Withdrawal from Palisades to Riots and Trump's 'Escalation'

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced on Sunday that ongoing unrest, particularly criticism directed at President Donald Trump’s federal actions, has led to the decision for the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) to end their checkpoints aimed at protecting homes in areas affected by the Pacific Palisades fire.

On Saturday, the police checkpoint that had been safeguarding local properties from incidents following the January 7 fire was dismantled, allowing the Pacific Palisades to reopen to the public.

The LAPD chief, Jim McDonnell, mentioned he was involved in a scheduled protest against the “no Kings” policy during the same time.

City officials are gearing up for a significant protest against the Trump administration, which was set to occur on Saturday. McDonnell indicated that the necessity to reallocate staff to manage the protest is a crucial factor, but this adjustment is also seen as essential in the aftermath of the devastation.

However, communications with residents warned that unrest would persist as long as federal immigration officers continue their operations within the city. The plans for security will remain in effect to protect the Pacific Palisades area.

Bass has criticized Trump’s “chaotic escalation” over the past week, not hesitating to reject the enforcement actions targeted at protesters by local authorities.
