California Senator Proposes Ban on Law Enforcement Masks
California Senator Scott Wiener, a Democrat, has introduced a proposal aimed at prohibiting law enforcement agencies from wearing masks while making arrests. He has likened this practice to that of secret police.
On Monday, Wiener also proposed a ban targeting the social media platform X. His argument stems from concerns that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents don masks to avoid being doxxed while they detain undocumented immigrants.
“We are announcing a new law (SB 627) aimed at banning local, state, and federal law enforcement from wearing masks.” He noted that some exceptions might apply when officers must cover their faces to maintain confidentiality while interacting with the public.
“We’re witnessing a troubling rise of secret police—shrouded in anonymity with no identification, no uniforms—who abduct individuals, and that undermines democracy while harming communities,” he added.
Critics of his proposal quickly labeled Wiener’s stance as potentially undermining public safety, accusing him of portraying law enforcement as thugs suited for intimidation. An official statement from X’s homeland security accounts responded, stating:
“Senator Wiener’s proposed law seeks to ban federal law enforcement from wearing masks, which is an unseemly comparison to ‘secret police.’ While officers face violence from rioters, politicians in sanctuary cities want to restrict ICE agents from wearing masks for protection against known threats that could expose their identities. Our ICE personnel, who regularly face a surge in attacks—reporting over a 400% increase—are essential in safeguarding American citizens from violent criminals and undocumented immigrants.”
Bill Melugin, a Fox News reporter, commented, “California has no authority to dictate actions of federal law enforcement.”
In response to Wiener’s efforts, various voices criticized the approach, suggesting it exemplifies the madness prevalent in California’s current political climate.
