Survey Reveals Conservatives Report Higher Happiness Levels

A recent survey involving 60,000 individuals across various social demographics—such as race, income, age, religion, gender, and political engagement—indicates that conservatives tend to report greater happiness than their liberal counterparts.

When participants were asked about their mental health, only 20% of liberals stated it was good, while 51% of conservatives reported similar sentiments. The results showed that 45% of liberals described their mental health as poor, in contrast to just 19% among conservatives.

Nearly half of the liberal respondents reported struggling with mental health issues, which is quite significant.

This survey utilized a scale from 0 to 100, measuring mental health, where 0 indicates severe mental disorders and 100 represents excellent mental health. The disparity between liberal and conservative happiness persisted across all demographics examined.

According to the findings, the average American rates their mental health at 60, placing it between good and very good. However, liberals reported an average score of 53, while conservatives scored higher at 68. This pattern of disparity is consistently evident in all subsets.

The study found that the happiness gap could not be attributed to various factors—like religion, marriage, income, political participation, sexual orientation, or social media use.

This begs the question: Is it possible that the left experiences higher levels of anxiety and unhappiness than the right?

That certainly seems plausible.

The researcher, Nate Silver, proposed three theories to explain this phenomenon, but I find them somewhat misguided.

  • First, there’s the notion that “liberals are more empathetic toward others’ suffering and the state of the world, while conservatives might prioritize their own happiness.”
  • Second, it suggests that “liberals feel oppressed, actively seek change, and advocate for increased government roles.”
  • Finally, “liberal expressions of negativity might be seen as solidarity with those fighting perceived injustice, appealing to others facing significant mental health challenges.”

But perhaps the underlying reason for the happiness gap is more straightforward.

Conservatives often grasp the complexities of human nature—understanding that it’s messy and inherently uncontrollable. This sense of acceptance can lead to a desire for personal autonomy and the mindset of “live and let live,” which isn’t just a phrase but a key to finding joy. Letting go of the need to control the uncontrollable is, in fact, one of the secrets to happiness, along with maintaining a solid work ethic and appreciating what you have.

In contrast, many on the left are often seen as striving for a kind of control over society, linked to a rigid idea of justice that can lead to their own misery. How can anyone truly be happy when they fixate on misunderstandings or the political choices of others?

There seems to be a common thread among liberals; they often react with frustration when others don’t meet their expectations. It’s as if they believe they can dictate others’ emotional responses, perhaps becoming upset over terms like “illegal” versus “undocumented.” Those who stay in a constant state of irritation may struggle to find happiness.

Furthermore, it appears that many on the left lack a sense of humor about themselves. Humor often serves as a vital indicator of character.

Think back to your school days. The unlikeliest candidates for happiness were usually the ones who enforced the rules and reported other students’ actions.

This parallel extends into adulthood.

Those who take themselves too seriously often miss the joy in life, similar to those overly focused on issues to the point of frustration.

Ultimately, conservatives tend to view the world with a sense of acceptance, recognizing obstacles yet finding comfort in them. In contrast, the left seems to navigate the same world with an oppressive need to control it.
