Reactions Erupt Following Trump’s Airstrike on Iran
Key congressional figures and progressive activists voiced their outrage online after President Trump’s announcement of an airstrike on Iran.
Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) expressed her concerns, tweeting, “Dear colleague: Don’t make another mistake in dragging our country into another war. You can stop Congressional oversight of war by signing on to us. A solution to combat power.”
Representative Ro Khanna (D-CA) stated, “Trump attacked Iran without Congressional permission. We must return to DC immediately and vote for @Repthomasmassie and my War Power Resolution.”
Libertarian-leaning Republican Thomas Massie joined the Democrats in condemning the strike, tweeting, “This is not constitutional,” referencing Trump’s earlier post on the matter.
Former DNC vice-chair David Hogg questioned the decision, asking, “What was the rationale for entering another war? And how will we fund this? If we can’t afford to spend trillions on healthcare, how can we justify spending it on an endless war?”
Former Florida Democrat Debbie Mukhar Powell criticized Trump, writing, “The US President informed the world about the airstrike on Iran without congressional oversight. Only Congress has the power to declare war, and we need to ensure the President coordinates military action and justifies the decision to the American people.”
Commentator and former council candidate Cenk Uygur added, “You know who’s not anti-war? The one who starts the war. Trump is the problem.”
Representative Summer Lee (D-PA) remarked, “Trump is acting completely outside of his authority and is trampling on the Constitution once again. This escalation puts millions of lives at risk. Congress must swiftly pass a resolution to assert our war powers.”
Representative Maxwell Frost (D-FL) voiced alarm, saying, “This is an escalation leading to more deaths. Congress must immediately intervene to stop the president from pushing our nation further into conflict.”
