Iran Launches Retaliatory Attack on US Base in Qatar
Iran announced a retaliatory strike on the al-Udeid airbase in Qatar on Monday. Reports of an explosion were confirmed by sources in Doha. State media in Iran stated, “the blessings of Operation Fatah’s operation against U.S. Aldeid base in Qatar have begun.”
Just before the attack, Iranian President Mahmoud Pezeshkian warned that the strikes on nuclear facilities conducted on Saturday would not go unanswered. He expressed on social media that although they didn’t wish to initiate a war, Iran would respond to the attack with resolve: “We will stand up to safety with all this #BelovedNation presence and respond to all the wounds in the Iranian body with faith, wisdom, and determination.”
The US military base, housing around 10,000 American troops, stands as the largest in the Middle East, strategically located southwest of Doha. It plays a crucial role in logistical operations against ISIS in Iraq and Syria, serving as a hub for air force and special operations of Central Command (Centcom). The base also coordinates British airstrikes against ISIS.
President Donald Trump had visited Al Udeid on May 15, during which he finalized a billion-dollar military sales agreement with Qatar. Qatar has been navigating a delicate balance in its relationship with Iran while expanding its military capabilities. Before the attack, Qatar had taken steps to halt all flights and ensure safety.
This strike, while significant, wasn’t entirely unforeseen. Observations from satellite imagery indicated that the US had relocated most of its aircraft from Al Udeid the prior week.
In response to the American B-2 bombers targeting three of Iran’s nuclear facilities with bunker buster bombs, Iran had vowed retaliation. Iranian officials stated that the military would not hold back from taking action against US interests in the region.
This situation continues to escalate, and the implications for US military forces in the Middle East could be severe, with experts warning of “irreparable damage” amidst rising tensions from the Iranian conflict.
