Fetterman Responds to Ocasio-Cortez’s Criticism of Trump’s Iran Strikes
Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman dismissed the concerns raised by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez regarding President Trump’s recent military actions against Iraq’s nuclear facilities. In a talk on Saturday, Fetterman expressed his support for the strikes aimed at three specific sites in Iran, which he believes are crucial for national security.
Fetterman, a Democrat, highlighted a potential issue with Ocasio-Cortez’s position, suggesting that her calls for action could dilute the severity of military responses in more critical situations. “I think we all know where we stand on this,” he told Fox News. “This isn’t going anywhere. The president has faced significant scrutiny, yet he remains in office,” he added.
“When such terms are thrown around, it lessens the impact of the actions taken. We need to reserve those discussions for when they’re truly warranted,” Fetterman stated.
On Saturday, President Trump announced the strikes on facilities in Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan, claiming these actions had inflicted “monumental damage.” Military leaders are currently assessing the extent of the destruction done.
Ocasio-Cortez responded quickly to Trump’s announcement, labeling his decision to bomb Iran without congressional approval as a significant breach of constitutional powers. She noted, “The president’s sudden action could escalate tensions and put us at risk of prolonged conflict.”
Other Democratic representatives echoed her sentiments, with one, Rep. Sean Kasten from Illinois, labeling the action a “clear violation.” Despite these concerns, Democratic leadership did not fully endorse the calls for Trump’s accountability, insisting that the dialogue around military engagement should involve Congress.
Fetterman, a prominent supporter of Israel within the Democratic ranks, defended the strikes, stating, “I know that many in my party may oppose military action here, but I’ve always been in favor. For me, it’s not about starting a war; it’s a targeted military operation.” He emphasized that he views the action as limited rather than a broad conflict.
Earlier, Fetterman had signaled the necessity for the U.S. to act concerning Iran’s nuclear ambitions, emphasizing the risks posed by a regime capable of acquiring such weaponry. He mentioned past hesitations within his party concerning military strategy, particularly amid recent flare-ups with Hamas and Hezbollah.
Shortly after the interview, reports emerged that Iranian missiles were fired toward U.S. bases in Qatar, specifically the Al Udeid Air Force Base, which is the largest American military installation in the region.
