NATO Summit: Trump Discusses Israel and Iran Tensions

During the NATO summit in Brussels on Wednesday, President Donald Trump expressed his pride in Israel for exercising restraint after a violation of the ceasefire with Iran, although he noted he was “technically correct” in his assessment.

On Tuesday, Trump criticized Iran, specifically mentioning Israel’s actions regarding a ceasefire breach. Contrary to his claim, it was Iran that had continued its missile assaults on Israel even after the deadline for the ceasefire passed. In response to these violations, Israel conducted airstrikes against Iran, similar to its previous military actions in Lebanon.

Trump urged Israel to halt its military operations and to have its pilots return. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly moderated the response while affirming Israel’s need to act. In what seemed to honor Trump’s request, Israeli pilots targeted a radar location near Tehran but chose not to pursue additional targets.

When Trump blamed Netanyahu for a ceasefire violation, both sides released timelines of the events, but the White House did not engage with the details.

During a press conference, Trump reconciled his previous harsher language toward Israel, adopting a more positive tone this time.

Speaking alongside NATO Executive Director Mark Latte, Trump answered questions regarding the ceasefire’s status:

I think it’s very good, I think it’s very good. Israel returned yesterday. I was very proud of them as they were back. They felt there was a violation and went out to address it. So they came back, and that’s great; it’s going very well.

Late on Tuesday, the Israeli Defense Force indicated that Iran had continued to send drones towards Israel. All of these were intercepted by Israeli defenses, and there was no further military action from Israel in response.
