Student Charged with Bombing Tesla Dealership
A university student has been accused of bombing a Tesla dealership in Kansas City and could face up to 30 years in prison if found guilty on all counts.
Owen McIntyre, who was released for gender-affirming care, allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at the dealership in March, damaging two cars and resulting in hundreds of thousands of dollars in losses.
The 19-year-old UMass Boston student entered a not guilty plea to charges of malicious destruction of property and illegal possession of unregistered destructive devices. If convicted, he faces a lengthy prison sentence, as reported.
His case has moved to the National Security Division of the Department of Justice, which generally deals with issues related to terrorism and espionage.
The response to McIntyre’s actions was clear. After his arrest, a spokesperson emphasized the seriousness of the situation: “Let’s be clear, anyone contemplating violence against Tesla properties will face consequences,” he stated. “You will be arrested, charged, and could spend decades in prison. It’s just not worth it.”
Federal authorities have been attentive to vandalism incidents at Tesla dealerships nationwide, which have apparently coincided with protests against Elon Musk during Trump’s presidency.
The FBI has initiated a task force to address these incidents more effectively.
Interestingly, Trump suggested sending criminals to serve time in El Salvador, where the U.S. has used prisons for deported gang members.
Recently, McIntyre was granted release by a judge due to serious medical needs, including daily medication and mental health support related to a diagnosis on the autism spectrum, along with ADHD and depression. His lawyer successfully argued for his release on these grounds.
He has moved to his parents’ home in Parkville, Missouri, but must wear an ankle monitor and adhere to specific conditions.
Prosecutors had sought to keep McIntyre in custody before his trial, which is slated for August 11th.
