Trump Honors Rabbi on Anniversary of his Passing
As the 31st anniversary of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson’s passing approached, former President Donald Trump reached out to Chabad Emissaries globally. In his message, he described Rabbi Schneerson as “one of the most dynamic and influential faith leaders in modern history,” reflecting on the strength and inspiration he personally derived from him during challenging times.
Trump acknowledged the Rabbi’s significant impact on Jewish life and global faith leadership, especially in revitalizing spiritual awareness following the Holocaust.
“Melania and I are privileged to send our greetings on the occasion of the Rebbe’s Yahrzeit,” Trump’s letter states. He remarked, “As I expressed in my proclamation on US Education and Shared Day, the Rebbe was an essential figure in modern spiritual leadership.”
He also attributed some of his administration’s groundbreaking criminal justice reforms to the teachings of the Rebbe, recognizing Chabad’s wide-reaching spiritual and social initiatives throughout the nation.
This year’s observance is set for Sunday, June 29th, with expectations of over 50,000 attendees gathered at the Rebbe’s burial site in Queens, New York. Known as Ohel, this site has become one of North America’s most visited Jewish sacred locations, honoring the Rabbi and his father-in-law, along with Rabbi Yitzchak Schneerson. It has served as a profound destination for people from various backgrounds since Rabbi Schneerson’s passing on June 12, 1994.
In a notable visit, Trump went to Ohel on October 7, 2024, a year after the Hamas-led attacks in Israel. This visit unfolded during a tumultuous personal time for him, as he faced two assassination attempts just weeks prior, contributing to his own challenges.
“During my visit to Ohel, I drew immense strength and inspiration from the Rebbe’s legacy,” Trump noted. He reflected on the release of Edan Alexander, an American-Israeli hostage, stating, “The nation felt the impact of the enduring examples of Ohel and the Rebbe. As the Talmud teaches, saving one life is tantamount to saving the entire world.”
Alexander’s family joined Trump during this visit, along with other relatives of hostages affected by the October 7 assault.
Trump wrapped up his letter with a declaration of his commitment to combat anti-Semitic hatred globally. He emphasized that this mission extends not just to the Middle East but to wherever he stands against such sentiments.
