Small businesses key to economic recovery with Trump's tax reform plan

US Economy Shows Signs of Strength Amid Ongoing Challenges

After several years marked by high prices and sluggish growth, the US economy is starting to regain its footing. Inflation rates are dropping to their lowest in four years, and job growth is robust, with more than 620,000 positions created since January. Business investments are picking up as optimism returns to various sectors. The president, Donald Trump, is endorsing this positive momentum with policies aimed at enhancing small businesses.

Many Republicans are now collaborating on the “One Big and Beautiful Bill Act of 2025,” which seeks to solidify Trump’s economic agenda, featuring what some argue is the most significant tax reform in a generation.

During my travels across the country, I’ve spoken with small business owners from a variety of industries— from family farms to local retail stores. There’s a consistent message: they’re not asking for more relief or burdensome tax regulations. Instead, they want a tax framework that lets them plan ahead while keeping more earnings in the bank. They prefer to incentivize hard work and growth rather than penalize it. This proposed bill aims to cater to all these concerns.

Transforming for a Brighter Future

With Trump’s focus on cutting unnecessary spending, small businesses now see inflation as less of a worry. What’s more pressing for them is the looming threat of increased taxes. If Congress doesn’t take action soon, the tax cuts established in 2017 may expire, potentially raising the top tax rate on small business pass-through income to 43.4%. This change would impact more than two-thirds of small business owners who report their income as individuals.

The “One Big and Beautiful Bill” seeks to avert what would be the largest tax hike in history. Making the 2017 tax cuts permanent, including certain deductions, would allow 34 million small business owners to keep more capital for hiring and expansion. This measure alone could generate one million new jobs in local communities and spur $750 billion in economic activity over the next decade.

The legislation also aims to increase disposable income for blue-collar workers. By making tips and overtime exempt from taxes, workers could take home more pay without additional burdens on employers. The bill would also eliminate certain IRS reporting requirements that complicate finances for gig workers and retailers, while boosting the child tax credit and ensuring family farms are protected from death taxes.

A Response to Pandemic-Induced Challenges

In recognizing the labor shortages that have arisen post-pandemic, this proposed bill seeks to encourage employment and establish requirements for able-bodied adults not receiving Medicaid benefits. This move could bring nearly 4.8 million individuals back to the workforce while reducing the number of ineligible immigrants, creating a clearer path between government incentives and job opportunities.

Additionally, the bill bolsters Trump’s economic vision by incentivizing domestic manufacturing. Companies would benefit from various tax incentives, including deductions for American-made products and investments in infrastructure. Such measures are designed not only to promote local production but also to revitalize the industrial landscape and create well-paying jobs for American workers.

Lastly, the bill aims to tackle an ongoing challenge for small businesses: the burden of excessive regulations. During the Biden administration, it’s estimated that new regulations have added approximately $5.8 trillion in costs. The proposed legislation intends to cut through red tape and foster a business environment conducive to job creation and growth.

Immediate Action Needed

Support for this proposal spans across party lines, reflecting a consensus among many small business owners, including those with more liberal views. The appeal lies in the practicality of the ideas rather than any ideological stance. These concepts resonate with the day-to-day realities of those striving to uphold their communities through hard work.

Unlike some past leaders, Trump remains focused on the individuals powering the American economy. The “One Big Beautiful Bill” reflects his commitment to families and small businesses by delivering tangible tax relief and reining in excessive governmental oversight. It prioritizes hard work and aims to restore small businesses as the cornerstone of American success.

Congress must act promptly. Small businesses are eager to continue their journeys of building, hiring, and innovating. They’re looking to Washington for support now more than ever.
