High-Stakes Meeting at Southeast Asian Security Conference

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrapped up his two-day participation in the Southeast Asian Security Conference with crucial discussions alongside Chinese officials. Tensions have been rising recently, not just over trade but also security issues involving China’s backing of Russia in the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

During his first official trip to Asia, Rubio held his inaugural face-to-face conversation with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi after attending meetings with other nations at the Southeast Asian Countries Association in Malaysia.

Both officials briefly addressed journalists and posed for photos at the start of their meeting.

This meeting occurred just a day after Rubio met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Kuala Lumpur. They explored potential new avenues for initiating peace talks regarding Ukraine.

The backdrop of the conference is marked by global unrest over US policies, particularly the significant tariffs that President Trump has threatened to impose on numerous countries, both allies and adversaries.

Rubio listened to concerns about these tariffs from Southeast Asian counterparts but mentioned that discussions primarily centered on security, governance, and the importance of working closely with the US.

“Of course, that’s been raised. That’s a problem,” Rubio acknowledged. “But I’m not saying that we’re just defining relationships with many of these countries. There are other issues we collaborate on. I think there’s a lot of enthusiasm about our presence here.”

President Trump views China as a major threat in various sectors, especially technology and trade. He, like previous presidents, has noted China’s growing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific, particularly towards its smaller neighbors in the South China Sea and Taiwan.

Trump has issued warnings of significant tariffs on Chinese exports, yet initial discussions between the two nations have not yielded substantial progress.

Since President Biden assumed office, the US has also accused China of aiding Russia and reshaping its military sector to bolster its actions in Ukraine. Rubio indicated that the Trump administration shares that viewpoint.

“I think the Chinese have clearly supported Russia’s efforts, and they seem willing to assist as much as possible without drawing attention,” Rubio stated.

Throughout the ASEAN meeting, Rubio and Wang appeared to be advocating for their respective nations as partners to Southeast Asian countries.

Rubio engaged in cooperation efforts, including signing a nuclear cooperation agreement with Malaysia, whereas Wang challenged the potential tariffs and positioned China as a stabilizing force in the region.

“The US is misusing tariffs, undermining free trade, and disturbing the stability of global supply chains,” Wang told his Thai counterpart.

During talks with Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Wang argued that such tariffs aimed to strip countries of their rightful development opportunities.

“In the face of a turbulent global landscape, China wants to be a dependable friend and partner to Cambodia,” he added.

On Thursday, Rubio met with Lavrov, where they issued a veiled warning to the US regarding its influence in Southeast Asia.

“Both Russia and China support ASEAN’s pivotal role in regional cooperation, striving to maintain peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific and cautious of larger powers creating rifts and inciting conflicts,” they remarked.

Meanwhile, Rubio found backing from Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong, who stressed the importance of US involvement for local stability.

“We seek to establish areas free from coercion or domination,” Wong said, emphasizing that fostering stable relations with China is essential for progress.
