Man quietly admits to killing and dismembering his elderly landlord: 'This is horrific'

Police footage showing the moment a man confessed to killing 74-year-old Annette Smith has drawn significant outrage, particularly after the incident was covered in a new television documentary.

Scott Patterson had been living in Smith’s home in Fairfield, Bedfordshire, England, for over ten years before he killed her on November 8, 2023. He reportedly “snapped” after growing weary of caring for her as she recovered from a stroke.

After committing the crime, Patterson attempted to conceal it while Smith was asleep. He then placed parts of her body in a storage unit and disposed of the rest in public bins around the city.

The shocking confession was revealed in a recent episode of the series 24 Hours in Police Custody, titled “Suburn Butcher.” This popular British show, which has aired since 2014, focuses on the police work at Luton Police Station, located about 34 miles from central London.

Previous episodes have discussed various criminal cases, but this latest story has particularly disturbed viewers, resulting in intense reactions on social media.

In the interrogation footage, Patterson spoke softly as he detailed his horrific actions, leaving many viewers unsettled. He informed the officers, who were aware that he had killed his elderly roommate, that he did not possess a complete body to show them.

“Where is Annette?” one officer asked, to which he responded calmly, “I don’t have a whole body.” He explained that he couldn’t keep her at home anymore and, feeling lost, decided to dismember her.

Patterson initially stashed her body under the stairs before disposing of it miles away from his residence.

Wearing a blue checkered shirt and a black baseball cap, Patterson elaborated on his actions during the police interview. He stated, “It was a progressive process. I couldn’t face doing that all at once,” and described how he first used a saw and knife to chop off her legs.

Having worked at a butcher shop, Patterson explained that his knowledge influenced his actions, admitting his exposure to horror films may have played a role as well. According to reports, he had also taken a butchery course.

Over “a few weeks,” he dismantled her body and stored Smith in plastic bags, admitting to feeling ill throughout the lengthy process. He then gradually discarded her remains in various locations around town.

To maintain his ruse, Patterson accessed Smith’s email account, posing as her to send messages and Christmas cards to her friends and family. This deception continued for months until her relatives reported inconsistencies, noting puzzling signatures in her communications.

Patterson initially claimed Smith had left with an unknown woman, but investigators quickly discovered her belongings—including her passport, clothing, and cell phone—remained in her home, alongside no activity in her bank account.

Detectives also obtained surveillance footage indicating that Patterson had stolen Smith’s jewelry and possessions. They arrested him on April 30, 2024, after uncovering he was significantly in debt, and he confessed to the murder shortly thereafter.

During the court proceedings, it was highlighted that Smith had opened her home to Patterson out of kindness after he fell on hard times. They had even traveled together, but their relationship shifted when her stroke left her less mobile, placing Patterson in a caregiver role.

Judge Murray condemned Patterson’s actions as “awful” and “cold.” He was sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum of 20 years before he could be considered for parole.

The case has sparked a new documentary, drawing widespread concern from viewers, many of whom expressed their alarm on social media.

Comments such as, “The people we walk past in this world can be very frightening,” and “His calm demeanor is unnerving,” echoed across platforms, highlighting the chilling nature of the crime.

One viewer even remarked, “This is terrible. Poor Annette.”
