US Ice Cream Companies to Eliminate Artificial Dyes by 2027

Recently, a coalition of ice cream manufacturers across the United States has committed to phasing out artificial dyes from their products by the end of 2027. This initiative aligns with the “Make America Healthy Again” campaign led by the Department of Health and Human Services’ Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

On a recent Monday, the International Dairy Food Association (IDFA) in collaboration with Kennedy Jr. announced that nearly 40 companies, responsible for producing over 90% of the ice cream sold in the nation, will eliminate several artificial colorants, including Red 3, Red 40, Green 3, Blue 3, Blue 2, Yellow 6, and Yellow 5.

“This is a Renaissance moment for American health,” remarked US Food and Drug Director Marty McCurry during a press event.

There’s long been concern over synthetic food dyes. Many people consider them unhealthy due to various potential risks, including allergic reactions and behavioral issues in children. For instance, Red 3 has been linked to cancer in laboratory animals, and studies suggest it could exacerbate hyperactivity, particularly in kids with ADHD.

Now, when you see “natural flavor” on food labels, it can be a bit misleading. Most might assume these ingredients are entirely natural. In reality, the starting material—like fruit—might be processed extensively in labs, which can introduce solvents, preservatives, and other additives that don’t align with the concept of “natural.” Sometimes, a single “natural flavor” can comprise over 50 different chemical compounds, many of which may not be naturally derived at all.

“I commend the International Dairy Food Association for taking steps to eliminate certified artificial colors,” Kennedy stated. “Americans have made it clear: they want real food without chemicals. Together, we’re making strides toward a healthier nation.”

Health advocates have long pushed for the removal of artificial colors from food, citing mixed findings that suggest these additives can lead to neurological disorders, particularly hyperactivity in children. However, the Biden administration’s FDA previously contended that approved dyes are safe, asserting that consuming foods with these dyes typically poses little risk to most children.
