A Montana father was discovered by friends brutally mangled to death in his tent. The man was so gruesomely mutilated that friends thought he was mauled by a bear. However, police say the “loving” father was killed in cold blood and not a victim of a bear attack.

Friends found a Montana father brutally murdered in his tent. In fact, the victim was so mutilated that his friends believed he had been attacked by a bear. But police insist the “loving” father was not killed by the bear. They call it murder.

On Saturday morning, friends of Dustin Jelsem went looking for him, who they hadn't seen on Friday and hadn't been seen since Thursday afternoon. That morning, friends found the 35-year-old father in a tent at a makeshift campground in Big Sky, Montana, an hour southwest of Bozeman.

“This incident was a vicious attack and detectives are working hard to locate and follow up on leads. No suspects have been arrested at this time.”

Jersem's friends immediately called the police and announced that he had been mauled to death by a bear.

“The question is, is there a threat to this community? The answer is we don't know. We don't have enough information to know at this time,” said Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer.

“We know that there is someone who has killed someone in a very heinous way, so if you're in the woods, you need to be careful and you need to remain vigilant,” Springer warned.

CBS News The autopsy revealed that Mr Jelsem had suffered “multiple cuts” including to his skull.

Authorities noted that there was no cell phone service in the crime scene area, making the investigation even more difficult.

Jelsem's sister — Gillian Price — said Of her brother, she said, “He was a loving and kind father, but he never deserved this.”

“I asked the community to find out who did this,” she added. “There's someone in our valley who can do some really heinous things.”

Jelsem was driving a black 2013 Ford F-150 pickup truck with a black topper and a silver aluminum ladder rack.

“He was brutally murdered at the campground and we need your help,” said Sheriff Springer.

Capt. Nathan Kammerman said, “Think of the entire canyon. If you see anything strange around the canyon or in the town where his truck is, please contact us.”
