‘Absolutely heartbroken’: Pregnant Amish woman found in home with throat slit and allegedly scalped, suspect arrested

A Pennsylvania man found his pregnant Amish wife dead in her home, lying in a pool of blood. Reports said her throat had been slit and it appeared she had her scalp scalped during the horrific attack. NBC News.

Shawn Cranston, 52, was arrested Saturday and charged with the murder of Rebecca Byler, 23. She was reportedly murdered in an isolated farmhouse in February, but the motive behind the incident remains unclear.

According to the affidavit, Rebecca’s husband, Andy Byler, came home and found his wife “lying on her back in a pool of blood in the living room of the residence.” Her throat had been cut, and authorities at the scene suggested that the wound was “removing her scalp.” [was found on] her head,” according to court documents.

Cranston is charged with murder, murder of an unborn child, robbery and trespassing. The newspaper reported that he is being held in the Crawford County Jail without bail.

According to a criminal complaint, Cranston is a truck driver and is accused of “shooting.” [Byler] He was hit in the head and had his throat cut. ”

A woman who identified herself as Cranston’s adopted daughter said she believed the killing was a case of mistaken identity. WXFP. “She never in a million years could have imagined that her father would turn out to be such a cruel monster,” said the woman, who asked to remain anonymous.

The Post reported that a family that lived in Byler’s home had adopted Cranston’s grandson several years ago, and Byler wanted Cranston back. “I think she started screaming at him and she came in, and then boom, she came in. That was enough,” the woman said.

“It’s scary just thinking about it. … As far as I know, he just wanted his grandson back.”

After the attack, authorities found Cranston outside a Dollar General store next to his home and arrested him. Charlene Hajek, a resident of the area, said the brutal killing had left the community in shock.

“We are a very close-knit community and we are really saddened by something like this happening,” she said.
