‘Always ask for your receipt’: Man issues warning on debit card scam after his neighbor lost $50 in the grocery store – The Daily Dot

According to one TikTok user, this clever scam poses danger to anyone with a debit card, especially if you’re not paying attention. Luckily, he’s raising awareness about why it’s important to check your receipts at the register. A recent post by Josh (@beardenjosh) video It quickly garnered more than 440,000 views on TikTok.

“I want to warn you all about a new scam I discovered yesterday because my neighbor actually fell victim to it,” he began.

Josh said a seemingly normal trip to the grocery store ended up costing his neighbor $50, and the culprit turned out to be someone people wouldn’t expect.

“So my neighbor went to the grocery store, and she was standing at the register. [and] When she finished, the cashier said, “Sorry, our receipt printer is out of order.”

After a moment, the cash register finally produced a receipt. My neighbor quickly grabbed it, slipped it into her bag, and left the store. As she pulled out of the parking lot, her phone lit up with a shocking alert from her bank: a charge of $102. She’d only spent $52.

“And she said, ‘Wait a minute, $102?’ So she checked, checked again, and it said $102. And she pulled out her receipt, and it said I got $50 cash back,” Josh continued.

Josh reveals how his neighbor had $50 stolen from him and who stole it.

Who stole $50 from her?

“These machines use cards. [and] You are presented with the option to get cash back. When asked, ‘Do you want cash back?’ you press no. The cashier also has the option to select the cash back and the amount, and that’s exactly what this woman did as a cashier. She selected $50 and was going to pocket that $50.”

The neighbor returned to the grocery store and confronted the cashier, who claims she became concerned and tried to find the neighbor to give her $50. The neighbor responded that she never asked for cash back, so the store manager intervened and defused the situation.

“Yes, after all, […] The manager was able to verify who pressed the cash back button and indeed it was the cashier on her side who pressed the cash back option.”

Josh warns at the end of the video that if you’re not careful about getting receipts or regularly checking your balance, unscrupulous cashiers can take advantage of that and pocket extra cash without you realizing it.
