2026 MLB All-Star Game Recap
This year’s MLB All-Star Game, held in Philadelphia, seemed to double as a celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. The atmosphere buzzed with red, white, and blue, alongside a remarkable lineup of talent.
However, the highly anticipated fireworks didn’t quite materialize at Citizens Bank Park. In a rather surprising turn, the American League managed to shut out the National League 4-0 during the 96th Midsummer Classic.
Pitcher Dylan Schiess from the Toronto Blue Jays struck out in the first inning, and a total of 10 relief pitchers later contributed to a three-hit shutout, highlighting the AL’s pitching prowess. Meanwhile, Cody Bellinger of the New York Yankees made his mark early, driving in two runs against Christopher Sanchez from the Philadelphia Phillies. Ben Rice also contributed with an RBI hit.
Chicago White Sox infielder Miguel Vargas hit the only extra-base hit of the game in the eighth inning—a home run off Justin Robleski, who was celebrating his 26th birthday as he pitched. This win marked the 18th victory for the American League in 23 games between these two teams, securing an overall lead with a record of 49-45-2.
For the National League, there were a few lone hits from Juan Soto, Pete Crow-Armstrong, and Otto Lopez that didn’t help move the runners beyond first base. Overall, the night showcased a total of 27 strikeouts, with 15 coming from American League pitchers.
Phillies player Kyle Schwarber led the charge for the National League, stepping in for designated hitter Shohei Ohtani, who was sidelined due to knee surgery, impacting the team’s performance.
Injuries also plagued the match, with Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene and Yankees players Ben Rice and Cody Bellinger losing their starting positions on account of various ailments. A notable incident involved Junior Caminero from the Tampa Bay Rays, who left the game after taking a 97.6 mph pitch to his hand in the third inning. Fortunately, X-rays later indicated no serious damage.
Major League Baseball players will take a break on Wednesday before the Phillies face the New York Mets on Thursday. Other league games will resume on Friday.
