Children Traumatized After Armed Robbery at Lemonade Stand
A 12-year-old boy and his 11-year-old sister were left deeply shaken when they were threatened with guns and robbed while running a lemonade stand, according to their father, David Byrne.
Byrne explained that his kids were enjoying a typical afternoon selling lemonade in their South Boston neighborhood when they were approached by two older boys around 4:40 p.m. Initially, the suspects expressed interest in buying lemonade but then claimed they didn’t have any money and left. However, they returned minutes later with one of them brandishing a firearm that he had tucked in his waistband.
“My kids immediately raised their hands and said, ‘Take whatever you want.’ I’m proud of them for staying smart and protecting each other in such a dangerous situation,” Byrne remarked. The assailants made off with all the cash the children had earned.
“This is horrifying. It’s grotesque. Such things should never happen to young children,” he added, expressing disappointment and concern over the traumatic experience. The children were left feeling sad and upset after the incident.
Local police are actively searching for the boys involved, but so far, no arrests have been made. Videos and images have been released to help identify the suspects, who are believed to be juveniles connected to similar armed robberies.
Neighbors around the area expressed their shock and fear. Susanna Ruotolo shared, “It’s terrible and scary. You never think something like this could happen on our street.”
In light of the incident, Boston City Councilman Ed Flynn announced that residents are coming together to support the children, aiming to help them reopen their lemonade stand. “Let’s show them how much love and support the Southie community has for them,” he stated. He also mentioned that half of the proceeds from the stand would go to local organizations focused on preventing gun violence.
