Mass Grave Discovered in Kenya

Authorities in western Kenya uncovered at least 33 bodies on Thursday, including those of children, some dismembered and placed in bags. This tragic find has sparked an investigation into the possibility that these bodies were illicitly taken from hospital morgues.

Detectives exhumed 25 children’s remains and eight adult bodies from a mass grave located in a church-owned cemetery in Kericho. Mohamed Amin, who leads the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, informed reporters that there is evidence suggesting these bodies were moved from Nyamira District Hospital to this private burial site.

Authorities are currently investigating the legality of the disposal process used for these bodies after they were removed from the morgue. Kenyan laws permit hospitals to dispose of unclaimed bodies within a 14-day period, granted they receive court approval.

A government pathologist performed an autopsy on the bodies to ascertain the cause of death, but identities have not yet been revealed. Two individuals have been arrested in relation to this case.

Reports indicate that unidentified individuals transported the bodies in a government vehicle, and there were claims of a hasty burial. Local residents have expressed concerns, with one, Brian Kibunja, calling for a thorough investigation. Another, Samuel Moso, suggested that the inquiry should determine whether the government had any involvement or if there was a different group at fault.

Three significant incidents of mass graves have been noted in Kenya over the last three years. Earlier this year, police found hundreds of bodies buried in the forests of Kilifi, connected to a religious leader implicated in the starvation of followers. Previous investigations have also uncovered additional mass graves in Nairobi.

This discovery coincides with rising apprehension regarding police abuses in Kenya. Human rights organization Missing Voices reported 125 extrajudicial killings and six enforced disappearances last year, a notable increase from the previous year’s 104 reported murders.
