Biden instructs media to ‘start writing’ that his inflation policies are ‘working’

President Biden told the press: His inflation figures.

The White House hosted the inaugural Creator Economy Conference on Wednesday, which was attended by about 100 digital creators and industry players. Biden made some remarks at the conference but initially declined to answer reporters’ questions.

But it did answer a big question about inflation falling to its lowest level in three years.

“Any comment on the inflation numbers? Mr. President, has the United States beaten inflation?” the reporter asked.

Biden lashes out at NBC’s Lester Holt over unfavorable media coverage: ‘What the hell happened to you guys?’

“Yes, yes, yes,” Biden said. “I said they’re going to have a soft landing, and we’re going to have a soft landing. My policies are working. Start writing it like that, OK?”

CNN correspondent MJ Lee then read the president’s remarks to Jared Bernstein, chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, and asked, “Do you know whether the president feels that the economic reporting in general has been off the mark or has been wrong?”

“That’s the first time I’ve heard him say that. [‘Start writing that way’]”The only way I can interpret that is that he thinks it hasn’t been done,” Bernstein said.

Bernstein detailed his views on media coverage of the economy and appeared to agree with Biden.

“I read a lot of your work, and I like some of it, and I don’t really agree with some of it. There’s some great work being done at the Brookings Institution on this, my former colleague Ben Harris and others have looked at how negative the economic reporting has become, and they’ve analysed the actual numbers, and they find that this is true,” he said.

He added, “Another study I found, which I think was pretty rigorous, suggests that the media tend to write about gas prices when they’re above $3.50 and not when they’re below $3.50. So I think the price I looked up this morning was $3.45. If you’re not writing about this, you might want to do so.”

Biden also joked about the changing nature of news organizations during remarks at an online creators conference on Wednesday.

“Now, is there a real press out there or a fake press? It’s a joke. It’s a joke,” Biden said. “Let me be clear, I have a lot of grandkids, and with all due respect, they don’t read the same newspapers or watch the same television as me. They listen to all of you. They listen to all of you.”
