The Biden administration on Friday tried to pass a resolution at the United Nations Security Council pressuring Israel to accept a temporary ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, but Russia and China vetoed it anyway.
era of israel report:
The United Nations Security Council failed on Friday to pass a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip as part of the hostage deal, after Russia and China vetoed measures proposed by the United States.
…
This further solidified the US government’s stance towards Israel. At the beginning of the five-month war, the United States disliked the term ceasefire and vetoed measures that included calls for an immediate ceasefire.
…
The draft stopped short of explicitly calling for Israel to immediately cease operations in Gaza. In the delicate wording of a Security Council resolution, the draft “determines” the “imperative” of an “immediate and lasting” ceasefire.
Also on Friday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would attack Hamas in its last stronghold, Rafah, with or without U.S. support. The Biden administration opposes these attacks.
The Biden administration and the Democratic Party, which initially supported Israel’s war of self-defense in Gaza in the wake of the Oct. 7 Hamast terrorist attack, have gradually increased public pressure on Israel.
