Boeing Moves Defense Headquarters to St. Louis

After almost ten years in Virginia, Boeing has announced it will relocate its defense, space, and security headquarters to St. Louis. This decision comes shortly after Democratic Governor Abigail Spanberger assumed office, taking over from Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin.

In a statement, Boeing emphasized that this move highlights the company’s commitment to connect with the employees who develop and deliver essential defense and space products globally.

The company also announced a substantial investment in advanced fighter production facilities, including one in St. Louis. This shift signifies a return of the Defense Headquarters from Arlington, Virginia, back to its previous location in St. Louis, where much of Boeing’s production takes place. They had established their headquarters in Arlington, near Washington, D.C., for nearly a decade before relocating there in 2017.

Boeing expressed that being closer to its workforce was a critical factor in this decision. “By aligning our leadership with our employees and investing in state-of-the-art facilities, Boeing is set to enhance our core businesses and spur innovation in defense solutions,” the company stated.

Steve Parker, CEO of Boeing Defense, Space, and Security, remarked that the move demonstrates a focus on disciplined performance across the company. He underscored the importance of leaders actively engaging with their teams to address concerns and strengthen the business.

Missouri’s Republican Governor Mike Kehoe celebrated the transition as a significant advantage for the region. He noted that Missouri stands out as a leading hub for aerospace and defense manufacturing, making the return of Boeing’s defense headquarters beneficial for local workers.

This change comes shortly after Spanberger’s inauguration, where she vowed to approach governance as a pragmatic centrist. However, critics claim her initial actions showed a different approach. Following her inauguration, the Democrats reversed several policies established by Governor Youngkin, focusing on overall affordability and zoning reforms.

Critics, like Rep. Pat Fallon (R-Texas), have pointed out that Spanberger’s early decisions indicate an inclination towards progressive policies reminiscent of California.

While Boeing’s defense headquarters will move to St. Louis, its global headquarters will stay in Arlington, Virginia, which relocated to that area in May 2022, a few months after Youngkin took office.

Spanberger’s office has not yet responded to requests for comments outside of business hours.
