High School Student Faces Suspension Over MAGA Hat Incident

A high school student in Orange County, California, experienced a suspension following an incident involving a “Make America Great Again” hat. This situation sparked political discussions with another student.

Zach Hornstein, a student at Laguna Beach High School, mentioned that he and some friends wore hats on September 11 in memory of Charlie Kirk, a co-founder of Turning Point USA who was tragically shot the previous day during a speaking event at the University of Utah.

“His passing really hit us hard,” Hornstein reflected. “While I might not align with everything he stands for, I appreciate how he encourages students to critically engage with different viewpoints and foster meaningful discussions. My mother is an immigrant, and I cherish this country.”

At the end of the school day, Hornstein reported that a female student took her hat and tossed it into a trash can in the girls’ bathroom. The dialogue between students escalated, as political debates ensued, with some using inappropriate language when referencing President Donald Trump.

Though Hornstein and his friends tried to move past the incident, a teacher advised him to file a report and ask for a written apology. Subsequently, the school issued suspensions to both students involved.

Hornstein expressed his frustration regarding the suspension, saying it disrupted his rigorous AP class schedule.

“Honestly, I don’t understand why I was suspended,” he told Fox News Digital. “During the conversation, I joked that if someone didn’t like America, there were always borders open to Canada. Several students, including the girl who took my hat, can confirm that.”

Despite the situation, Hornstein maintains his friendships and thinks the school administration overreacted.

“She was also interrupted. It felt like an excessive response,” he commented. “It was an emotional day for many, being 9/11. I believe she acknowledged her mistake afterward.”

“We managed to handle it in a constructive manner. Hopefully, the adults involved can learn from this experience rather than complicating things further,” he added.

Hornstein’s mother, Janet Semenova, mentioned that her son is a model student with no prior disciplinary issues. She believes this incident reflects a bias against certain political beliefs.

“This feels like a double standard,” she shared. “Students with specific political views seem to be held to different standards compared to others.”

The Laguna Beach Unified School District issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to protecting students’ rights to express political views. The statement emphasized the importance of free expression in a democratic context and the school’s role in guiding students through various perspectives while ensuring respect.

“In the event of disputes on campus, schools must evaluate the actions involved. California law outlines the suspension criteria and reviews the facts to ensure fair handling,” the statement added.

The district clarified that its dress code does not prevent students from wearing political apparel, and Hornstein noted that students are allowed to express political messages as long as the attire is appropriate.

Semenova stated that the family plans to appeal the suspension before the school board.

“We truly value this school and its educators and are saddened that this situation has been mishandled,” she stated. “We hope the school can recognize this as a learning moment and strive for improvement. Navigating the teenage years can be challenging, and it is essential that we guide them toward becoming more empathetic and understanding adults.”
