Canadian city’s bizarre PR stunt to celebrate Pride Month goes viral after online ridicule: ‘Pathetic attempt at propaganda’

The official social media accounts of a Canadian city were ridiculed and forgotten after people realized their PR stunt was completely pointless.

Fredericton’s social media team posted a message in support of Pride Month, accompanied by a video of a man who appears to be painting a crosswalk rainbow colors.

“Downtown Fredericton looked a little brighter this morning as city crews painted the Pride sidewalk in front of City Hall,” the account said. I have written on Platform X, formerly known as Twitter. “This is one small step on the long journey we take together towards a more inclusive and safer society for all!”

Keen-eyed social media users were quick to notice something odd about the worker.

“I was about to ask why he needed a helmet, but then I realized there was no paint on the roller.” Responded Social media storyteller David Burge.

The post was widely condemned and has been viewed more than 10 million times.

“If North Korea is producing this kind of propaganda, they should at least be competent enough to use a paint roller instead of pretending to paint with a dry roller.” read Another tweeted: “Canada is so embarrassed.”

“This is a pathetic attempt at propaganda (laughs). This guy isn’t drawing anything.” read Another responded: “His paint rollers are so dry lol. If people are going to do this at least make it believable.”

“Look! This is a magical paint roller that doesn’t require any actual paint.” Said Another critic.

“Rola sees it as red. Perfect. Everyone can see it’s not red, but Rola is mentally ill and sees herself as red.” Responded Another user.

“An example of government efficiency: painting on the street, not on a roller.” Reply Another critic.

Others also pointed out that the account had stopped replying to tweets.

The letter may have been a response to the controversy over felony charges being filed against several adults and teens who left black scuffs on Pride crosswalks with their scooters, after which a scooter rental company announced it would designate LGBTQ+ crosswalks as “no-go zones” for scooters.

Fredericton is the capital of the Canadian province of New Brunswick. It is located in eastern Canada and has a population of approximately 63,000.
