What’s happening with the Los Angeles Chargers? When the NFL schedule came out in the spring, many thought the Chargers would easily start the season 2-0, facing the Arizona Cardinals and Las Vegas Raiders in the first two weeks. However, those expected victories quickly turned into disappointing losses.
The Chargers managed to score just 14 points in both games while allowing 26 points. Their defense has struggled significantly, giving up an average of 349 yards per game and managing only one takeaway. Pro Bowl safety Derwin James, who recently injured his left pinky finger, expressed the team’s frustrations following their loss to the Raiders. “We got to look each other in the eye, man, and just tell the truth and just get better,” he remarked, admitting the current performance has been far from satisfactory. “I’m angry, but being angry don’t fix anything. We have to win these games; there’s no reason we’re playing like this.”
Despite having 17 tackles and a pass breakup in the first two games, James emphasized the need for the rest of the team to step up as they head into Week 3. Historically, teams starting the season 0-2 don’t fare well, and a statistic from OPTA Stats highlights the weight of the Chargers’ situation. They are only the second team in NFL history to lose two consecutive games by double digits at home to teams that had under a .200 win percentage the previous season.
And it doesn’t get any easier from here. Coming up, the Chargers face a tough matchup against the Buffalo Bills in Week 3, followed by a trip to Seattle to play the Seahawks in Week 4.
