Sen. Eric Schmidt Sued by China for $50 Billion
Senator Eric Schmidt, a Republican from Missouri, is facing a staggering lawsuit from the People’s Republic of China. This comes as a follow-up to a case he initiated during his tenure as Missouri’s attorney general, targeting China amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
The lawsuit seeks around $50 billion in damages and involves entities such as the Wuhan Municipal People’s Government, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Wuhan Institute of Virology. It claims that Schmidt, alongside FBI Deputy Director Andrew Bailey and the State of Missouri, has damaged China’s reputation through what they describe as malicious litigation and the spread of disinformation.
In a statement, Schmidt expressed his view that this legal action is an attempt by China to retaliate. “Having been exiled from Communist China, I am now being targeted in a $50 billion litigation campaign, and I see it as a badge of honor,” he commented. He further highlighted the significant toll the pandemic has taken, noting that it resulted in over a million American deaths and widespread economic chaos.
Schmidt believes the lawsuit lacks validity. He argues that any ruling from a Chinese court would not hold up against challenges from him and Missouri. “This is merely a distraction from their actions,” he added, suggesting that the world already recognizes the gravity of China’s role in the pandemic.
The origins of this legal conflict trace back to Schmidt’s 2020 lawsuit, where he accused the Chinese government of hiding vital information about the virus and mishandling protective equipment. This earlier case led to a $24 billion judgment against China earlier this year.
Now, the Chinese government is claiming around 356 billion yuan (over $50 billion) in damages, alleging that Schmidt’s actions caused significant harm to their reputation and finances. They want published apologies in major outlets, including the New York Times and CNN. Clearly, this situation has escalated into a significant international legal battle.
