Oilers Knocked Out of Playoffs, McDavid Speaks Out
The Edmonton Oilers faced a surprising early exit from the Stanley Cup Playoffs, losing to the Anaheim Ducks in the first round. Fans may worry things could worsen, particularly after Connor McDavid made some telling remarks about the organization.
Prior to this season, the Oilers had reached the Cup Finals in consecutive years, only to lose to the Florida Panthers each time. It’s been a tough journey for them.
Despite uncertainty surrounding his future with the team, McDavid signed what some are calling a “show-me” contract worth $25 million over two years. This deal seems to give the organization some breathing room to prove they can clinch a Cup. But, the season hasn’t exactly shown that potential.
After the loss to Anaheim, McDavid described the team as “an average team with high expectations.” He reaffirmed this sentiment recently, which has set off alarms for many fans. He joined longtime teammate Leon Draisaitl in expressing concerns that “the team is not heading in the right direction.”
“Yeah, I feel the same way,” McDavid mentioned, according to reports. “I made those comments just a few days ago. And I still believe that the organization has taken a step back. It starts with me and Leon; we all need to step up our game.”
The new contract gives the Oilers about two years to prove themselves, although realistically, McDavid might only give them a year. If he doesn’t believe they have the potential to win a Stanley Cup, they may have to start thinking about the future.
Letting a player of McDavid’s caliber leave in free agency would be unimaginable for the organization. So, the pressure is really mounting in Edmonton now more than ever.
