Trump’s Mixed Reception at NBA Finals

During Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden, President Donald Trump drew a significant reaction from the sold-out crowd. His appearance on the large screen during the national anthem elicited a blend of responses.

While some in the audience cheered as Trump saluted from his suite, the louder response was boos, which seemed to overshadow the cheers. Shortly after, the broadcast cut back to an NYPD officer holding a flag on the court.

Accompanying Trump was his granddaughter, Kai Trump, who was seen with her hand on her heart. Knicks owner James Dolan was also present in the suite, sitting beside Trump when he was shown on the screen.

This reception starkly contrasted with President Trump’s previous appearance at the College Football National Championship, where he was met with enthusiastic cheers from fans at Hard Rock Stadium. Surrounded by his grandchildren, he waved, and the crowd responded warmly.

The difference in reactions from fans in New York compared to those in Florida was noticeable. In anticipation of Trump’s visit, security measures were significantly heightened in the city. Barriers were erected around Madison Square Garden, and the presence of law enforcement increased, leading to longer wait times for attendees.

The NYPD also closed off certain streets to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic to ensure security. A watch party planned for the vicinity was canceled, as stated by Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. She explained that local authorities were coordinating with the Secret Service and prioritized security over the planned viewing party.

MSG challenged the NYPD’s decision by claiming that local officials—not Trump’s visit—were responsible for denying permission for the event. Since starting his second term, Trump has attended various sporting events, including the Super Bowl and the Daytona 500.
