For countless Americans, the issue of affordability isn’t just a topic of debate; it’s a daily challenge. Many families find themselves grappling with choices like whether to buy groceries or prescriptions, cover rent or childcare, and manage gas or electricity bills. This struggle is palpable, and understandably, they want solutions.
Despite the president’s initial promise to address rising costs, over a year has passed without significant improvements. In fact, there’s a growing sense that the administration, along with congressional allies, is unintentionally pushing living expenses higher for everyday working Americans.
There’s a pressing need for a concrete plan to tackle affordability. Yet, instead of recognizing the issue, the president has labeled it a “false narrative”—a statement that many find hard to believe. Families are indeed feeling the strain; whether it’s stretched paychecks or seniors worrying about financial stability as they age, these issues are real.
To meet this challenge, we collaborated with members of the New Democratic Coalition to develop the New Democratic Affordability Agenda. This initiative provides practical strategies to reduce the primary costs facing working families: healthcare, housing, energy, childcare, and essential items like groceries.
The New Democratic Coalition represents a major ideological group within the House, boasting 115 members committed to breaking political deadlock and driving change. This agenda isn’t merely theoretical; it’s designed to enhance competition, boost supply, and ultimately prioritize the needs of working families.
When it comes to groceries and everyday items, prices remain stubbornly high. Contributing factors include strained supply chains and concentrated market power. Previous trade policies have exacerbated the scenario, with tariffs acting like hidden taxes on common goods. Estimates suggest that these tariffs add upwards of $1,600 annually to household expenses. Our initiative aims to strengthen domestic supply chains and promote smallholder agriculture to help bring down prices.
On the healthcare front, costs are increasing at a rate outpacing wage growth, which is tough on families and employers alike. New Republican health care proposals threaten to make things worse by shifting costs back to households and small businesses. Predictions indicate that millions could lose insurance, and many more may see their premiums soar. Our plan seeks to make healthcare more accessible and predictable through better insurance protections, transparency, and expanded competition.
Looking at housing, the U.S. faces a significant shortage, with estimates suggesting a deficit of around 4 million units. This has led to surging rents and limited options for homeownership, compounded by outdated regulations hindering new construction. Our strategy aims to eliminate these obstacles and facilitate the building of millions of new homes over the next decade. While increased supply won’t fix everything immediately, it’s a critical step toward improving affordability.
Investment in the energy sector has lagged, contributing to rising utility bills and uncertainty for families. Our agenda will prioritize responsible energy development, modernizing the power grid to ensure reliable and affordable electricity.
Families are also under pressure due to the escalating costs of childcare and elder care. Many parents are forced to reduce work hours or leave jobs entirely because care options are either scarce or too expensive, while many older individuals worry about safe aging. Our approach intends to broaden access to both childcare and elder care, allowing families to manage their responsibilities while planning for their futures.
Affordability is central to the promise our government makes to its citizens. If you work hard in America, there should be a reasonable expectation that you can secure a comfortable life for yourself and your family.
We strongly believe everyone should have access to essential needs such as housing, healthcare, food, childcare, education, and retirement, while also having the means to enjoy life a bit with things like vacations or the occasional nice car.
This Affordability Agenda is a commitment to helping Americans not just survive but thrive. It’s not purely about ideology but rather whether Washington acknowledges the gravity of the affordability crisis and is willing to act swiftly. As families across the nation look for assistance, the New Dem Affordability Agenda presents our solution.
